Introducing “Encountering God’s Story”

I’m pleased to announce that Arise Press has published my book, Encountering God’s Story: A Guide to Better Read and Understand the Story of Scripture (St. Louis, 2023) and copies are now available on Amazon.

I started working on this book several years ago after a conversation with some friends about how daunting it is to make sense of the Biblical story. Sure, they knew the story of Jesus. And they remembered some flannel graph Sunday school lessons from the Old Testament. But how did those stories fit together? And what about all of the other stories in the Bible?

Encountering God’s Story speaks to these questions by equipping readers to encounter the Bible contextually as a story. Beginning with an overview of the story the Bible tells, this book then introduces reading strategies and tools for understanding the history, linguistics, and theology that illuminate the Bible’s message about a God who created the world and is working to rescue humanity from brokenness. My hope is that readers not only be equipped with tools to better read and understand the Bible, but also take advantage of the study section, which provides opportunities to practice those tools.

I’m excited to see this book make it to print and pray that it helps people encounter the story of the Bible in meaningful and faith-building ways. Find a copy here.

Reminds me of something Kevin Bywater would have said back at Oxford: “Context is King”!
